Sidney Alfred Parsons and his AncestorsMary Complyn was a great-great-grandmother of Harriet Eliza Boyes who became the wife of John Parsons the Southampton publican. She was therefore a three times great-grandfather of Sidney Parsons who was the grandfather of the author of this web page.
Mary was born in Morestead in Hampshire late in the year 1721 or early in 1722. She was baptised there in the Parish Church on the eighth of February of that year. Her father was John Complyn who came from a family of yeoman farmers in the village. Read more about them at the following link — The Complyn Family of Morestead.
The chart below shows three generations of Mary’s ancestors. Her mother Elizabeth came from the Goldfinch family who had farmed in Compton, a village south of Winchester in central southern England, since before the civil war and her father John was descended from The Complyns of Weeke & Headbourne Worthy. Weeke and Headbourne Worthy are small villages to the north of Winchester.
Mary was the seventh of her parents’ ten children; she had three older brothers, three older sisters, and three younger
brothers.
In 1729, when Mary was only seven years old, her mother died. Mary probably continued to live in Morestead with her father until he died in 1744.
By then Mary’s older sisters were married but Mary moved to Easton, a small village about two miles north of Morestead, where she
probably lived with relatives.
Mary married John Newlyn in Easton on the 18th of November 1745. John’s family were farmers who lived in the southern part of the parish of Tichborne which is close to Morestead where Mary had grown up.
Mary and John lived in Easton for several years in a small cottage known as The Water House. Their first six children were born there: John, Thomas, Mary, William, Elizabeth and Robert. William, who later became the father-in-law of John Boyes of Owslebury, has his own biographical web page.
In 1755 Mary, John and their family moved to Compton, south of Winchester, where John took a lease of 21 years on New Barn Farm, the second largest farm in the village. The lease was arranged by Richard Goldfinch, Mary’s cousin, who gave up the lease in their favour. Mary and John had three more children, Richard, Faith and James, while they lived in Compton, but in 1768 they were struck by tragedy. Three of the children died in quick succession. The first of them, Richard was buried on the 28th of May, Faith was buried on the 5th of June, and Elizabeth just four days later on the 9th.
John and Mary lived in Compton for the rest of their lives but records show that he had kept at least some of his land in Easton.
Mary died in April 1792 and was buried in the chrurchyard at Compton on the 30th of that month. She was survived by her husband John Newlyn.
Children of Mary Complyn and John Newlyn
Mary’s son William Newlyn, who was baptised in Ovington near Easton in 1751, was a
great-great-great-grandfather of the author of this web page. William’s daughter, Faith married
John Boyes of Owslebury. You can read about William by clicking on the following link:
